A shallow, closely-patterned tyre does none of these well once the ground is soft. It skates, slides, and packs with mud - which is exactly why knobbly tyres exist as their own category.
Why Late-Season Ground Is So Demanding
The transition from summer to autumn produces some of the most difficult ground of the year for a towed trailer:
- Hard ground sheds the first rain: Sun-baked soil does not absorb heavy rain quickly. Water sits on top, creating a greasy layer over still-firm ground - a surface a poor trailer tyre will simply slide across.
- Then it turns to mud: As rain continues and the ground softens, gateways, headlands, and well-used tracks churn into deep mud exactly where trailers have to pass.
- Loads make it harder: A laden trailer pressing down on soft ground is far more likely to bog or slide than an empty one, and late-season work often means carrying feed, logs, or spoil.
