By mid-season, your machines have been working hard for months - and the tyres have taken the brunt of it. A quick tyre check now, partway through the busy period, catches small problems before they turn into breakdowns at the worst possible moment. This guide gives busy fleet operators a fast, practical inspection routine that takes just a few minutes per machine.
You do not need to take anything apart or pull machines out of service for long. The goal is a rapid visual and hands-on check that flags anything needing attention, so you can plan repairs around your workload rather than reacting to failures.
Why a Mid-Season Check Matters
Spring prep gets your fleet ready for the season. But months of hard use take their toll, and problems that were not visible in spring will have developed by now:
- Gradual wear: Tread wears steadily through the season. What looked fine in spring may be marginal by mid-summer.
- Accumulated damage: Cuts, embedded debris, and small punctures build up over weeks of work.
- Slow leaks: Minor leaks that were not noticeable in spring may now be causing chronic underinflation.
- Heat and UV: Summer conditions accelerate rubber degradation, especially on machines left standing in the sun.
A few minutes per machine now saves hours of downtime later. The busiest part of the season is exactly when you can least afford a machine out of action.
The 5-Minute Tyre Check
This quick routine covers the essentials. Run through it on each machine - it is fast enough to do during a normal service interval or even a lunch break.
1. Check Pressures
Underinflation is the single most common cause of tyre problems and premature wear. Check each tyre against the recommended pressure and top up as needed. If a tyre is repeatedly low, it has a slow leak that needs investigating. Check when tyres are cold for an accurate reading.
2. Inspect the Tread
Look at the tread depth and pattern. Is there enough tread left to see the season out? Is the wear even, or is it heavier on one side? Uneven wear points to alignment, pressure, or loading issues that will only get worse. For turf tyres, check that the pattern is still able to grip and distribute weight properly.
3. Scan for Damage
Run your eyes - and a gloved hand - over the tread and sidewalls. Look for cuts, gouges, bulges, and embedded objects like thorns, wire, or stones. Remove debris carefully. A bulge in the sidewall is a serious warning sign that means immediate replacement.
4. Check the Sidewalls
Summer heat and UV exposure cause sidewall cracking and perishing. Look for fine cracks, particularly on machines that spend time standing outside. Cracked or perished sidewalls mean the tyre is degrading and should be replaced regardless of tread depth.
5. Look at the Valves
Check that valve caps are in place and valves are not damaged or leaking. A faulty valve causes slow leaks that mimic punctures. Valve caps keep dirt out and provide a secondary seal - a quick and cheap thing to get right.
What to Do With What You Find
The point of a quick check is to triage - sort what you find into three categories:
- Fix now: Anything unsafe - bulges, severe damage, dangerously low tread, or a flat. Take the machine out of service until resolved.
- Plan soon: Worn tyres that will not last the season, slow leaks, and minor damage. Schedule these around your workload before they fail.
- Monitor: Early signs of wear or minor sidewall marking. Note them and check again at the next service.
Keeping a simple log - even a note on your phone - helps you track which machines need what, and spot patterns like a tyre that keeps losing pressure.
Reducing Mid-Season Punctures
If punctures are slowing you down, mid-season is a good time to act rather than waiting for spring.
Tyre sealant can be added to tyres at any point in the season. It seals small punctures automatically, and applying it now means protection for the rest of the busy period. It is a quick job that pays for itself in avoided downtime.
For machines that keep suffering punctures despite sealant, consider switching to puncture-resistant tyres at the next replacement. The Redwing RX Aramid range provides aramid protection across the shoulders and sidewalls - not just the tread centre - which is unique to Redstone in the UK market. Combined with sealant, it forms a two-layer defence against the punctures that cause most mid-season downtime.
Keep Spares on Hand
The fastest mid-season repair is the one you are ready for. Keeping a small stock of common consumables means you can deal with problems on the spot:
- Inner tubes: In the sizes your tubed machines use.
- Repair materials: Plugs, patches, and the tools to use them.
- Sealant: For topping up or treating machines as needed.
- A spare wheel or two: For your most critical machines, a ready-to-fit spare turns a breakdown into a five-minute swap.
