The Wimbledon fortnight has come and gone for another year, and for two weeks the world watched tennis played on what is arguably the most scrutinised grass in sport. What most viewers never see is that the moment the last ball was struck, the work started again. The day after the final, groundstaff begin stripping the courts back and rebuilding them for next summer.
That relentless cycle is the reality of fine turf. It is a living surface expected to perform to an exact specification, and keeping it that way is a genuine science. Here is what goes into it, and what grounds teams at every level can take from the way elite surfaces are managed.
It Starts With the Grass Species
Not all grass is equal, and species selection is the foundation of any fine turf surface.
Wimbledon's courts have been sown with 100% perennial ryegrass since 2001, replacing an earlier mix that included creeping red fescue. The reason was durability: the older blend simply could not withstand two weeks of intense modern play without thinning out where the wear was heaviest. Perennial ryegrass produces a dense, hard-wearing sward that recovers quickly and gives a consistent bounce.
The principle applies everywhere. Bowling greens, cricket squares, golf greens, and sports pitches all use different species and blends chosen for the specific demands of the surface. Fine fescues and bents suit closely-mown, low-wear surfaces. Ryegrass suits high-traffic surfaces that need to take a beating and recover. Getting the species right is the difference between a surface that holds up and one that fails halfway through the season.
Cut Height Is a Precision Business
Wimbledon's courts are maintained at exactly 8mm during The Championships, a height that has been in place since 1995 and is the product of research into what works best for both play and the survival of the grass plant.
Getting there is a gradual process. The grass sits at around 13mm over winter, then from late March the height is brought down roughly a millimetre at a time over successive weeks until it reaches playing height in early May. During the tournament itself the courts are cut daily to hold that height steady.
The lesson for any fine turf manager is that cut height is not a setting you simply dial in. Dropping height too fast stresses the plant, weakens the roots, and leaves the sward vulnerable. Lowering gradually gives the grass time to adapt.
What Lies Beneath
A fine turf surface is only as good as what sits under it. Elite courts are built on engineered profiles - drainage, gravel, and a carefully specified rootzone - so that the surface drains quickly after rain and plays consistently.
Maintaining that structure is a year-round job:
- Aeration: Deep aeration relieves the compaction that builds up through a season of traffic and play, letting air, water, and nutrients reach the roots.
- Top-dressing: A fine layer of specified soil or sand levels the surface, improves drainage, and reinforces the rootzone. Elite venues apply several tonnes per court.
- Verticutting: Vertical blades thin out thatch and encourage upright growth, preventing a spongy surface that plays inconsistently.
- Overseeding: New seed is worked into the surface each year to keep the sward dense and repair worn areas.
None of this is glamorous, and none of it is visible on television. But it is what makes the visible part possible.
The Machinery Problem
Here is the tension at the heart of fine turf management: every one of those operations requires machinery, and every machine has to drive across the surface you are trying to protect.
Mowers, rollers, aerators, top-dressers, sprayers, and utility vehicles all put their weight onto the turf, repeatedly, throughout the season. On a surface maintained to millimetre tolerances, that traffic causes real problems if it is not managed:
- Compaction: Wheel traffic presses the rootzone down, undoing aeration work and restricting root growth. Compacted ground drains poorly and produces uneven bounce.
- Marking and scuffing: Tread patterns imprint on closely-mown turf, and tight turns can tear the surface. On a surface judged partly on appearance, that is a visible failure.
- Wear lines: Machines following the same route repeatedly create tracks where the sward thins and the soil compacts hardest.
Why Tyres Are Part of the Science
The interface between machine and turf is the tyre, which is why tyre choice is a genuine agronomic decision rather than a purely mechanical one.
For the finest, most closely-mown surfaces, smooth tyres are the standard. With no tread pattern to imprint, they roll across without leaving a mark, and their flat profile spreads the machine's weight over a broad, even contact patch rather than concentrating it. Less point loading means less compaction, which means less remedial aeration work later.
For fairway-height turf, pitches, and surrounds, turf tyres use a shallow, closely-spaced pattern that adds grip without the tearing that aggressive lugs cause. Utility vehicles moving staff and materials around a site need tyres that carry the load without churning the ground on the way across.
The other side of tyre management is pressure. Running turf tyres at the correct pressure is what preserves the wide, even contact patch that protects the surface. Overinflated tyres narrow the contact patch and concentrate weight. Underinflated tyres wear unevenly and can roll on the rim. Checking pressures regularly is one of the cheapest things a grounds team can do to protect their turf.
Keeping the Fleet Working
Fine turf maintenance runs to a schedule that does not flex. If the mower is off the road, the surface does not get cut, and a missed cut on closely-mown turf shows immediately.
Punctures are among the most common causes of unplanned downtime, and sports grounds carry plenty of hazards: debris, wire, thorns from boundary hedging, and forgotten pegs. Tyre sealant applied inside the tyre seals small punctures automatically, often before anyone notices, keeping machines available through the busiest part of the year.
The Same Principles, Any Budget
Elite venues have resources most grounds teams can only imagine. But the science does not change with the budget. Choose the right grass for the wear it will take. Lower cut heights gradually. Aerate to fight compaction, and then protect that work by managing the traffic you put on the surface. Get the tyres right, keep them at the correct pressure, and keep the machines running.
Do those things consistently and you will have a better surface, whatever you are working with.
